Carter Evans is founder and editor-in-chief of Astounding!—a formerly popular spec fiction magazine currently in its death throes. Despite John’s delusions, Carter’s apology quickly turns into something more as the two lonely men find a powerful connection. Inexplicably drawn to John, Carter invites him along on a road trip. But as they travel, Carter is in for some big surprises, some major heartbreak… and just maybe the promise of a good future after all.

Carter Evans is the founder and editor of the science fiction magazine Astounding! but the publication, like most print media these days, is on its last legs. Carter can’t afford to keep it going for much longer. Adding to his headaches are the submissions of one J. Harper, a very persistent, and very bad, author who keeps sending in new versions of his work despite numerous rejections. Carter’s drunken attempt to rebuff the writer backfires and he ends up meeting J. for John Harper in person. John turns out to be a charming if somewhat awkward man with a few eccentricities, chief of which is the belief that he is an alien stranded on Earth.In spite of John’s quirks, Carter finds himself strangely attracted to the man, and impulsively invites John to go on a road trip Carter’s ex has roped him into. The trip proves to be a turning point in both Carter and John’s lives.
“Astounding!” is a sweet and slightly quirky romance with a science fiction angle. It manages to poke a little gentle fun at the common memes of both genres, even while employing many of them. Having key characters that are science fiction writers and editors as part of a science fiction story is a bit risky, but the author pulls it off rather well. It is part of what allows the story to have a little fun with the plot, and also means that the story can be moved along rather quickly, since there’s not a lot of explaining to do.
Most readers will probably describe this as “soft” science-fiction, or even fantasy. There’s no rocket science involved, so the story will appeal as much to those just looking for romance as well as those who like something with a little more thought-provoking story.

First off, please do not be put off by any labels like science fiction applied to this. This is an excellent story. It is science fiction but that is not the focus and certainly doesn't detract from the romance.
As usual, the characters are unique individuals with their own voices that ring true. The writing is elegant and crisp and descriptive in It's brevity.
It really a fantastic story.
Sometimes, someone you know says, 'this is a great book--you should read it!', and you do because you trust their opinion and they haven't let you down in the past. So, I bought this book without even reading the description. As I worked my way through it I thought, 'Ok, John is not REALLY an alien, right?' But as I got deeper in the book the answer to that question no longer mattered. This book is a love story. It is an amazing love story which takes you on a wild ride with very well rounded characters and great scenery to boot.
Carter is so heartbreaking. Right from the start of the book you want to rescue him and help him find love. He, of course, finds this all by himself. But he also finds out how great his friends are and how much he still has to contribute to the world. The author develops the story at a nice, steady pace. There were points where the story felt a little like it was dragging, but really, that was probably just my anxiety regarding the fate of John and Carter. The secondary characters were well done, although I could have lived without the overly repeated jokes about Freddie killing off his literary characters. He was clearly a take off on George RR Martin and his saga a Game of Thrones type story. Even the names of the main characters, 'John' and 'Carter' are a nod to the Edgar Rice Burroughs character. There are lots of references to popular science fiction/fantasy. She talks a lot about editing, which seems a little odd, but that was Carter's job, so just over done a bit.
The main point is that this was an incredibly sweet and emotional story. I never cry reading books, but I teared up several times during this book. I will definitely read more books by this author. I'm so glad I took the recommendation and read a book I might otherwise have overlooked.
Astounding! is the name of this book and also the fan fic science fiction rag that Carter edits. It's been popular for years and it has a dedicated fan base. Many authors have launched their careers from it's pages including Carter's best friend and ex-lover Freddy. Unfortunately Astounding! no longer pays the bills and Carter is down to editing the last issue.
Carter is a hermit where he haunts the same places, doing the same routine, living in the same apartment for years. He has no family and few friends. His labor of love in editing Astounding! is in it's death throws and Carter is in mourning.
John looks like a famous '50's actor, loves to read, but is a lousy writer. He survives off investments. John has been on his own, friendless, for fifty years. Imagine. John can't be around computers or cell phones so he does entertainment without electricity. I can't even imagine. Yet he takes everything in stride and enjoys life. Books are his love.
John and Carter come together under odd conditions. As their story unfolds, both came out of their shells, became better, together. When things got tough Carter proved himself. He didn't fall back into his old ways but stepped up and reformed his life. And when things got tough he reached deep inside and fought, because loving someone is worth fighting for.
I wouldn't mind a continuing book about John and Carter or Keith and Freddy. I assume Carter will live as long as John. I wonder if Carter can alter his friends lifespans by sucking them into his energy.. . .It's a thought. - Dan's Wife
