A robot and a human falling in love? How could I not read this book? Funnily enough I read the second "installment" of this series first. I say "installment", because they aren't strictly a series. With the intertwining themes of reincarnation, new and reborn love, and "what is a soul?" "what is love?" it is easy to see why this would work. Doing this actually brought to light some interesting plot points that were foreshadowed that I might not have noticed had I read the books in their published order. That being said, I loved the slow burn love story, which for all it's fantastic themes and unbelievable scenarios...was very real. I loved the connection between the "imperfect" Jane and Silver, who's seeming "perfection" actually lends to him a truly human need to fulfill expectations that he very quickly learns to rise above. I could go on about how their love for each other utterly changes them both for the better, but I'd rather you pick up this book, read it for yourself and see. It is wonderful.

The Silver Metal Lover Tanith Lee 9780553581270 Books Reviews

This was not my first Tanith Lee book (actually it was a collection of her short stories called "Black As Night, Red As Blood" - fabulous), but it is definitely one of my favorites.
I don't want to go into too much detail about the story, but I will say that for me, "The Silver Metal Lover" was a story about growing up. We accompany the heroine Jain on a journey from childhood to adulthood. As her confidence develops, her own true self is revealed and she is able to overcome the restrictions placed upon her by her friends and family, and society as well.
I really enjoyed reading the reviews for this novel. It is interesting to see the different impressions that this story left with different people and I think that this is an indicator of how good this book really is.
I don't know how I managed to miss this book for all these years. Maybe I ignored it because it is advertised as a SF romance, but in truth that is such a small part of a book that carries such a strong and meaningful message. Every review I've read seems to say "for some unknown reason" Jane falls in love with a robot. Perhaps they were so focused on the love story they missed the main point of the book. People, or at least the people in Jane's life, are unworthy of love. They are manipulative, cruel, selfish, jealous and deceiving. Even her truest friend, Clovis, was motivated to do good things only if the act would give him some pleasure as well.

In a world filled with that kind of narsacism what choice did a kind person like Jane have. There was no human deserving of her love or capable of returning it. So when she met a robot, programmed for truth and kindness, he was like a dream to her. He would never lie, cheat, or trick her. His sole purpose in life was to make her happy. And when he failed he did not leave her, he tried again. It is a relationship most people dream of having but never will. At least not with a person. (My dog's a lot like that.)
It's hard to categorize this book. THE SILVER METAL LOVER isn't like any other book I've ever read even though I've read romantic sci-fi/fantasy before. A lot of the reviewers, whose praise I read before purchasing SILVER, mentioned having read this book as teenagers. Maybe that's part of what made SILVER so different from many of the books that I've read as an adult-that it's told from the perspective of a teenager, Jane. Jaen. Jain.

SILVER is set in a not-so-distant future in which robots are a part of everyone's lives-in the form of train conductors and taxi drivers for regular people or as servants for the rich. Jane is a poor little rich girl who follows all the rules...until she meets one of Electronic Metals' latest models, an experimental design from the Sophisticated Formats line. He is a Silver Ionized Locomotive Electronic Robot, Silver. And he is beautiful...in every way. If you don't believe in love at first sight, read SILVER.

Don't let the narrator's age fool you; SILVER is a book that will probably touch the heart of any person who reads it regardless of age. There is a tremendous sense of time to the way the book is written. And SILVER is made richer for it. I mean to say because of the way the story is told, the way Tanith Lee never gets ahead of herself, as a reader you will find that you discover truths as they are revealed to the characters. You will likely feel the surge of excitement as the suspense or romance builds; the drama and emotion will burst in your heart at the same time it erupts in the lives of the very characters you are reading along with. Lee's writing has given readers the ability to be inside Jane's head as she tells her story, instead of watching skeptically from the sidelines.

The romance of SILVER isn't to be found in the bedroom, but in the building of a real relationship. And the suspense is to be found in the contrivances that would keep the lovers apart jealousy, insecurity, domination, obsession and blindness.

Loved It Even Though It Made Me Cry.
Reality as seen through the prism of Our Goddess, Freya.

Many technical details are anachronistic because technology has superseded the narrative, but that very observation is Reality viewed through the prism of Our God, Frey.

With two eyes, depth emerges.
I first read this book in the early eighties and I still think of it from time to time. And while a read a lot then, and read a lot now, very few books have that quality of just floating back into my mind. It was not just because of the unusual love story but also the theme of how a mother can subtly undercut their own child. This is a great girl's coming-of-age that has both charm and depth.
