I saw this ebook the same week that my 15 year old son bought a guitar with the intention of teaching himself. The book is an easy read, especially with the author's light, sometimes humorous, style. It reads like the teacher is right in the room with you. This book had some very good tips on how to be successful at learning the guitar. I thought the emphasis on being personally responsible and "in charge" of one's own learning was great and can be applied to many areas in life. (Gotta love those "teachable moments" in a teen's life.) The book lays out the first week's lesson plan very systematically. By the end of the week the student will have almost guaranteed success and, more importantly, an easy to follow, concrete method to apply to future learning. It made me want to get my son's guitar out and learn myself (how uncool that would be for him to have his Mom learn along side him?...Maybe when he is at school, I can sneak a lesson in :-))I highly recommend this book to anyone just beginning to play guitar, or to anyone who is serious about improving their guitar skills.

It's so simple and straight forward but this is what my music teacher and other books don't tell you. I would recommend this to anyone who is serious about playing the guitar and wants some practical advice. No sugar coating just honest advice.
I'm an intermediate player so the first part of the book was a little redundant, but it did reinforce a few things I've let slip for a while. The second half was very informative and useful in helping me to clean up and improve on pieces I've been working on for a while. I recommend this book for people who have hit a rut and aren't sure how to procede.
The step by step down to earth style of the book is very helpful for someone as impatient as I am to learn this greatest of musical instruments. The author's advice and instructions were common sense in many ways, and that's its' genius. We need the validation of what we inherently know to come from the mouth of a virtuoso or expert. So as to give us the confidence to continue with an instrument that even Jimi Hendrix got frustrated with on many occasions.
This book is truly a gem. It has opened my eyes to many things that I have been overlooking over the past quarter of a century. No kidding. I mean, some of the concepts might seem like common sense, but really, you may have been overlooking them just as I had been for so long. Do yourself a favor and get this book, or get it for a serious guitarist in your life. With discipline and perseverance, as well as actually reading and using the book, you can change a life for the better through the information presented here in this book.
I would give it 10 stars if I could! It's really that good, no joke.
Looking forward to anything new by this author, as he speaks and writes in a very rational and easily digestible format. Great job!
My son loathed the guitar because he was not able to play it well. The instructors, too, were not helpful. Out of curiosity, I purchased Don's book and asked my son to read it.
Believe me! This book does contain the 7 keys for unlocking the guitar playing potential in anyone.
Thanks to this book, my son has picked up his guitar and his musical journey has begun!
I am in no way a dedicated guitar player. But it's something I've always wanted to learn how to play. I even asked for a guitar for my birthday one year, and limped along learning chords before allowing it to collect dust in my closet.
When I found this book, it gave me the motivation to dust off the guitar and give it another go. I appreciated how the author shared his own experiences, and then gently taught techniques that made it easier to understand how to play. While I'm still no master, I think I'm getting a better hang of it. This is a book I'm happy to keep revisiting as I improve my skills.
I am a senior citizen who took up guitar almost 2 years ago, from everything I have seen and read (including scientific journals), people at my age tend to learn a little slower than younger people. While I am quite pleased I have gotten as far as I have. The problem was, I was still lacking speed. I put one of these keys into practice the same day, and I cannot believe the difference in just one session! This book is an absolute gem. I realize that people learn differently, and some people may not find this as helpful as I did, so I can only speak for myself...I play faster and smoother and couldn't be happier.
