What does it feel like to know that the aircraft you are flying in is crashing - that in seconds your life may be over? What are the thoughts that flash through your mind? How do you react?  These are the questions author and journalist Earl Moorhouse put to fellow survivors when he began researching this compelling and deeply moving account of the world's first Boeing 747 jumbo jet disaster at Nairobi, East Africa in November 1974. He, his wife Lynn and their two young children were among the survivors.   The buildup of tension is relentless - Lufthansa's Boeing 747 Hessen lifting into the night sky over Germany, crossing the Mediterranean and the African deserts in the dark; some passengers watching a Clint Eastwood movie, others sipping cocktails in the upstairs lounge. As morning breaks, the 747 lands smoothly in Nairobi for a brief refuelling stop and a change of crew on the way to Johannesburg. And then, with 157 aboard, a take-off run. The wheels lift, the aircraft rises 100 feet and plunges back to earth, breaking in two against an embanked road. It ploughs on, bursting into flames. It comes to a halt in the muddy bush, and the survivors begin a desperate fight to escape the inferno. Some seemingly "ordinary" people become heroes. And ninety-eight make it out.   This is their story.

Absolutely riveting. So much chance goes into who services. Also interesting to read from the perspective of how much air travel has changed since the 1970's. And how the survivors are affected long after the incident. I found it especially interesting how the survivors were responded to when they returned to the airport, and can imagine myself in that circumstance. People just couldn't believe what had happened to them. Highly recommended.

Wake Up It A Crash The Survivors' Stories Earl Moorhouse 9780956907363 Books Reviews

I am scared, no, terrified of flying. But fascinated by flying accidents. Have always wondered what it felt like to be in an aircraft that was go I g to crash. This book answered my questions. Very well written, I really felt like I was there. Still scared of flying though😬
Wake Up, It's A Crash - The Survivors' Stories A lot of nonsense and little of interest.
This book paints a powerful picture of the chaos and confusion that follow a plane crash. It was also interesting to learn of the long recovery period and how the effects varied among the survivors. Even though most plane crashes have survivors, we rarely hear anything about them or the aftermath of the crash.
This book gives you a lot of detail from the survivors perspective. I found it very interesting. Also reinforces the need to pay attention to the safety presentation and material in the seatback.
Thanks so much for sharing this experience with us. So sad to think about, for all the lives lost. I would guess you went through PTS. All of you. Everyone seems to handle this a little differently. God bless you all now and forever. Couldn't put this book down
The first "loss" of a Boeing 747 was a Lufthansa plane. I was living in Germany at the time, 40 years ago, as an exchange student. Ironically, Lufthansa is now the ONLY airline that owns the passenger version of the newly redesigned Boeing 747-8i, as if to make up for the loss and its mistake. It is important to always put airline crashes in perspective without losing sight of the human experience in them. Most importantly, learning how to live on after a crash, appropriately remember those who died, and advance aviation safety and technology as a result are the goals and outcomes needed and presented in this book.
News coverage of plane crashes abound with interviews of those who get out. But what a difference here, where a survivor writes a book. He goes far beyond the interview phase, depicting survivors’ emotional struggles for years after the disaster. Truly the rest of the story, in a very-well-done fashion. Congratulations.
