Oceanswept Oceanswept Trilogy Book 1 eBook Lara Hays Reviews

If you are a lover of historical fiction, STOP HERE ! This is nothing but a trite "romance" piece of fluff......
Suspend your sense of reality and embark on this swashbuckling adventure with 17-year-old English lady Tessa and the dashing pirate Nicholas. It kept me involved from the first page to the last. Never a dull moment, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you reading. I especially appreciated the respect played to Tessa's virtue--nothing sexual beyond a few passionate kisses.

Very few editing errors on my version. I don't care for the cover art; it's not very interesting, and doesn't draw me to the book. I read it because I received it for free, and the reviews made it interesting. I'm glad I did.
I can assure you that Oceanswept is much better book than Captain Blood was a movie. I read the book and also saw Captain Blood at a very early age; that is why it was hard to write this review. I am way too old to be reading a book that I feel is aimed at young adults that still enjoy flights into romantic fantasies.

This book has a swashbuckling pirate and a kidnapped/rescued beautiful young damsel. You can easily see where the plot is going to take you; young damsel in distress + rescued/kidnap by a swashbuckling pirate = love.

At my age I should have been bored, or something, however the book is so well written that it quickly captured my attention even after I turned the page and read, “The End.” I felt there had to be more to this story and of course there is in the authors next book in the series. I gave this book a five star review and I would recommend it to all my friends who still are young at heart.
Pirates! Romance! Adventure!

This is a fun, fast-paced read. The love story is sweet (and PG, which I appreciated given the youth of the main character). It starts right off with action-- a shipwreck. Our heroine finds herself aboard a pirate ship, which might have been miserable if not for the charming Nicholas (the handsome pirate with a heart of gold). He filled his role as dashing hero admirably. At first, I feared the protagonist would be unbearable--she starts off as a bit of a spoiled brat. But she grows and develops some real backbone as the story goes. I have to give her credit for constantly fighting on. Though, I did find her constant questioning of the hero's loyalty and motives a little irritating. I mean, what does a bloke have to do to earn a little trust!?

I will say that I could have done with a bit less interior dialogue used to explain information that was already self evident. I don't need the protagonist to think about a character being clever if I can perceive that cleverness for myself. I don't need a character to think about the events of a scene that transpired in the previous chapter. I remember what happened. I don't need the character to think repeatedly that something is unfair or ridiculous. I should be able to read that reaction in their behavior. This is a personal pet peeve of mine, and I suspect something that doesn't bother most readers...but there it is.

Overall, a good fun read! I tore right through it and enjoyed the blend of adventure and romance.
While not badly written, the plot is weak. The story runs like a "CW" teen girls show. He love me, he doesn't love me, I love the new guy, he doesn't love me, first guy loves me........ and on and on. First book wasn't bad second book just drags on...
I hadn't really been expecting much from this novel. I figured it would be a fun jaunt at sea, and after some of the early exchanges between Tessa and Nicholas, I was honestly expecting a bit of a bodice ripper out of this one. I was pleasantly surprised with Hays' writing that characters had some depth to them, had inner turmoil, and second guess each other's motives.

Tessa's inherent distrust of Nicholas and constant second guessing of his actions was believable. I appreciated that, even as her feelings grew for him, she still had doubts about his true nature, given the circumstances under which they met. I hadn't expected to want to read the rest of the trilogy, but now I can't wait to!
"Piracy is what I do, not who I am," he defended.

If you are looking for a light-hearted historical fiction adventure with a side of romance, I definitely recommend Oceanswept to you.

Privileged Tessa Monroe is 17 years old and on her way to the St. Kitts in the West Indies following her father's reassignment in the British Navy, but unfortunately a hurricane hits while they are at sea. She wakes up days later in an unfamiliar boat and learns that she is the only one to survive. Nicholas "Marks" Holladay protects her when she first wakes up, but Tessa becomes weary with his evasive responses to her questions and his insistence on her not being seen by anyone else. Turns out she is on a pirate ship, and she is anything but safe...

It seems that Nicholas and Tessa are written in the stars, they feel an instant connection that each struggle with. From different worlds and stations in life, they each struggle to see eye to eye and figure out if they will fit in one another's world. As insta-love as this sounds, it isn't really... there's a slow build-up of camaraderie and a "will they? won't they?" cloud hangs above them. But if you are looking for steamy romance, Nicholas is nothing but a gentleman - he is set apart from the other pirates, and I am a sucker for a good guy that became "bad" because of circumstances. In many ways Tessa becomes his salvation as well as his freedom.

This is a fast paced story with a touching and endearing romance. There isn't a lot of depth, but sometimes what you need is a light and heart-warming read. I did struggle a bit with the piratey/sailing references (like the bells), but it really did immerse me in the time period!
If you want a story based on a weak woman, here's the one for you! "My father died, my whole life has exploded around me, but good gosh if only the sexy pirate would give me another look." Come on...
